Helping you find a cure to Brain Cancer
Who: Associate Professor Kerrie McDonald ran an internationally renowned brain cancer laboratory for over a decade. She has reviewed grants for NHMRC and MRFF and publications for The Lancet, Nature, and Science to name a few. More recently, she led a not-for-profit organisation giving voice to patients and their familie
After 15 years in the laboratory, A/Prof McDonald has decided to alter direction.
She wants to share her passion by helping others in research, the clinic and most importantly, the brain cancer community.
A/Prof McDonald was awarded her PhD in 2001 from the University of Melbourne. She was invited to Oxford University, UK to work in her first postdoc role.
A/Prof McDonald joined the Kolling Institute of Medical Research and led a CNS tumour lab, specialising in brain cancer and pituitary tumours.
In 2010, she was recognised as the inaugural Chair of the Biomarkers and Translational Lab at UNSW. She drove research discoveries from the bench to the clinic. Four clinical trials for brain cancer patients are ongoing.
A/Prof McDonald has always had a passion and a striking ambition to do more for the brain cancer community.
1. Brain Cancer remains significantly underfunded.
Assistance with grant submissions, review proposals and research strategies is needed. A/Prof McDonald's has had extensive experience as a member of NHMRC and MRFF panels and as an Editor for many International journals.
2. Great clinical ideas take time.
Unfortunately this process is slow and cumbersome and clinicians are frequently time poor. A/Prof McDonald is well experienced in trial protocol writing, IRBs and full human ethics submissions. She also was a member of the Human Ethics committee (South Eastern Health District).
3. Diagnosis of brain cancer is scary.
A/Prof McDonald has developed important networks, both within Australia and around the world. She has knowledge and insight regarding the latest scientific breakthroughs, what clinical trials are available for recruitment, and can tap into experts in the field that are willing to help. She can help to navigate quite a complex web of clinical systems.
She can help empower the patient and their families through connecting experts and easing confusion.
